Patients Sound the Alarm: Growing Lines and Safety Concerns at Grocery Pharmacies

Results of New Patient Survey Expose Increased Wait Times and Medication Errors

As grocery pharmacists negotiate a new contract, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Southern California Locals are releasing new survey results from grocery pharmacy patients examining wait times, service conditions, and medication safety.

The survey of 118 grocery pharmacy patients reveals a clear pattern: longer lines, mounting workload pressures, and troubling safety concerns inside grocery-based pharmacies. These findings come as grocery pharmacists, who are currently negotiating a new contract, report chronic understaffing and rising prescription volumes inside supermarkets. 

Results of the survey show that among grocery pharmacy patients:

  • Nearly 59% say lines have increased at their pharmacy in the past four years

  • Almost half (48%) report waiting more than 10 minutes for service

  • About one in nine patients (11.9%) say they have received a medication error

Grocery pharmacists are responsible for reviewing prescriptions for accuracy, checking for drug interactions, administering vaccines, managing insurance issues, and counseling patients. As responsibilities expand and staffing remains tight, patients are experiencing longer waits and growing strain at the counter.

Pharmacists negotiating their new contract are calling for stronger staffing standards and competitive wages to retain experienced professionals. They argue that investing in pharmacy staffing is not just about workplace conditions, it is about protecting patient safety inside community grocery stores.

Growing Lines: Nearly six in 10 grocery pharmacy patients report that lines have increased over the past four years — a sign of sustained growth in demand and workload.

Extended Wait Times: Nearly half of patients report waiting more than 10 minutes for service, with some reporting waits of 20 minutes or more.

Medication Safety Concerns: Approximately 12% of grocery pharmacy patients report experiencing a medication error, a serious concern in any health care setting.

Workload Pressures: Patients frequently describe pharmacists as overwhelmed, understaffed, and juggling multiple responsibilities at once.

The survey was conducted among grocery pharmacy patients from Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons, Pavilions, and others in early 2026.
